Dairy goats could transform Ethiopian agriculture by upgrading fodder quality.
The crop and livestock sectors in Ethiopia are closely connected, with oxen being important draft animals. However, the traditional oxen plough system is facing challenges due to smaller farms and limited fodder. To address this, alternative tillage systems like zero-tillage or cow traction are being considered. A model was created to analyze the resource constraints of the Ethiopian crop-livestock system and explore ways to improve it. The model suggests that fodder quality is crucial for livestock production. One potential solution is introducing dairy goats, but this would require upgrading fodder quality.
