River bank erosion threatens water quality and fish population in UK lake.
The researchers studied how river bank erosion contributes to sediment entering Bassenthwaite Lake in the UK. They monitored sediment levels in the River Derwent and Newlands Beck, finding that the Derwent carries over five times more sediment than Newlands Beck. Sediment transport mainly occurs during intense, infrequent flow events. This increased sedimentation in the lake has led to poorer water quality and a decline in the vendace fish population.
