Intercropping boosts water efficiency, could revolutionize farming in water-scarce regions.
The study compared growing wheat and broad beans together versus separately, and barley and broad beans together versus separately, to see how it affects water use. They found that when wheat and broad beans are grown together, they use less water compared to growing them separately. Barley and broad beans together use more water than barley alone. Water use efficiency is higher when wheat and barley are grown together, but lower when broad beans are grown with other crops.
