New regulations drive sustainable urban development with territorial approaches in EU.
Territorial approaches are a big part of Cohesion policy from 2014-20. New rules set aside 5% of funds for Integrated Sustainable Urban Development. Tools like Integrated Territorial Investment and Community-led Local Development are used. Different countries have different ways of using these tools. Some focus on big cities, others on smaller towns. They mainly focus on environmental protection and social inclusion. Integrated Territorial Investments are used in urban areas but also in other regions. They cover themes like innovation, low carbon economy, and social cohesion. Community-led Local Development funds vary across countries and regions. They can be used in urban and peri-urban areas. Most countries use program Managing Authorities to oversee these funds.
