Rapid vegetation recovery after wildfires worsens surface runoff and soil erosion.
The study looked at how vegetation recovery after a wildfire affects surface runoff and soil erosion in mountains. They measured runoff and erosion in areas with rapidly recovering vegetation and bare soil. Results showed that areas with fast-growing vegetation had less runoff and erosion compared to burned areas with no vegetation. Rainfall and vegetation were found to have a big impact on runoff and erosion. The study suggests that as burned areas naturally recover with vegetation, runoff and erosion may decrease over time. Areas with little vegetation or bare soil continue to have high runoff and erosion.
