Water stress reduces plant photosynthesis, impacting food production and climate.
Water stress affects how well wheat plants can photosynthesize and release water vapor. Researchers studied this by changing the amount of carbon dioxide in the air around the plants. They found that as the soil's water potential decreased, the plants' ability to photosynthesize was limited by how open their stomata (tiny pores on leaves) were. This limitation increased as the soil became drier. However, when the carbon dioxide concentration was increased, this limitation decreased.
