Filtering through size-graded media is more effective when starting with coarse media and progressing to finer media, contrary to current sand filter practices. Upflow filtration showed operational benefits over down-flow filtration, but had challenges with cleaning. A three-layer filter with anthracite, sand, and garnet sand in the correct sequence reduced head losses and maintained stability after backwashings.
