Flooded paddy fields impact water quality in Korean agricultural watersheds.
The study looked at how farming affects water quality in Kangwon Province, Korea. They monitored water quality in streams and groundwater for 1-2 years. They found that flooded rice fields can change groundwater quality. Nitrogen levels in water were similar in streams and groundwater, showing that groundwater affects stream quality. Suspended solids and BOD stayed mostly constant in streams. Phosphorus and bacteria levels varied widely. The study suggests that long-term monitoring of rural watersheds is important for managing water quality in larger water systems.
