Maine's Salt Marshes at Risk of Displacement Due to Coastal Development
Salt marshes along Maine's coast come in four types based on how they formed: Back-barrier, Transitional, Fluvial, and Bluff-toe. Transitional and Bluff-toe marshes are new discoveries. The type of marsh that develops depends on sediment availability and wave energy. Marshes are less common in areas with high tides and fast sea-level rise. They may contribute peat to the coast as they erode, but human activities could change their future.
