Renewable energy: the overlooked economic goldmine for utilities and customers.
Renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and biomass can generate a lot of electricity in the US, especially in the West and Midwest. These technologies have become cheaper and more reliable since the 1970s. Despite this, utilities mostly ignore them in their plans. One reason is a lack of information, but another big reason is that many utility planners don't realize the economic benefits of using renewable energy. Adding renewable energy can actually help utilities and customers save money, especially when things like customer demand, fuel prices, and environmental rules are uncertain.
