Urban Runoff Reduction Transforms City Waterways, Boosts Public Health
The study looked at how different ways of managing storm water in cities can affect the quality of nearby water bodies. They used computer simulations to see how controlling sources of pollution and managing sewer systems in real-time could help. By reducing wastewater and paved surfaces that cause runoff, they found that these measures can significantly decrease pollution in the water. These actions also improve the overall quality of the water. Specifically, reducing paved surfaces can prevent pollution from entering the water after small rainfalls. However, even with these measures, there may still be some negative effects on the water quality.
