Groundwater depletion in Haryana State threatens future water security.
Groundwater flow in a part of Haryana State, India, was studied using a computer model. The area chosen for the study is facing high stress on its groundwater. The researchers used a 3-D model to simulate the flow of water in three layers underground. They found that in 24 out of 32 blocks studied, the groundwater usage is more than what is sustainable. The model was calibrated using data from observation wells, and it showed that the groundwater conditions could worsen by 2015 if current water usage continues.
