Factors like pollution load and wetland substrate type affect how well constructed wetlands can remove nitrogen. In one study, wetlands with Phragmites australis plants and specific soil-slag mixtures showed the highest nitrogen removal rates. Total phosphorus levels also played a role in nitrogen removal efficiency. Different plant species and growth periods influenced how effective the wetlands were at removing nitrogen.
