Imported emissions dwarf UK's domestic climate efforts, undermining greenhouse gas reduction targets.
Researchers used a special model to see how UK's actions to fight climate change affect the greenhouse gas emissions caused by what people in the UK buy. Regular methods of counting emissions only consider emissions from activities within the UK, not from things the UK brings in from other countries. While the UK's own emissions are going down, emissions from products consumed in the UK are going up. By analyzing data and linking it to their model, the researchers found that UK's climate strategies can impact the emissions from what people buy, changes in buying habits can help in the fight against climate change, and that some emissions may still happen because of imports from countries outside certain climate agreements.
