Heavy metals stunt weed growth and decrease chlorophyll content in plants.
The study looked at how cadmium, nickel, and lead affect the growth, chlorophyll, and protein levels of three types of weeds. The heavy metals slowed down the growth of the plants and reduced the amount of chlorophyll in their leaves. The roots were affected less than the shoots. The levels of proteins and proteases in the roots and shoots changed together. Adding the metals to the soil increased their levels in the plants, especially in the roots.
