Soil acidity study reveals best method for improving crop yields.
The researchers studied soil acidity in Inceptisols in Assam, India, to understand how it affects lime requirement. They found that pH-dependent acidity was the main contributor to total potential acidity. Different methods of estimating lime requirement showed varying results, with the Woodruff method performing slightly better. Soil properties like pH, exchangeable Fe and Al, and extractable Al were correlated with different forms of acidity and lime requirement. Overall, the nature of soil acidity in these Inceptisols was mostly pH-dependent, and the Woodruff method may be recommended for routine soil testing due to its simplicity and speed.
