Ala-Gln dipeptide protects rat livers from ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Alanyl-glutamine dipeptide (Ala-Gln) was tested in rats to see if it could protect the liver from damage caused by lack of blood flow and then sudden return of blood flow. Rats given Ala-Gln had lower levels of liver enzymes after reperfusion compared to rats given saline. The Ala-Gln group also had higher levels of a protective antioxidant (GSH) and showed changes in proteins that help regulate cell death. The study suggests that Ala-Gln can help the liver handle the stress of ischemia-reperfusion injury by boosting antioxidants and influencing protein expression.
