Livestock emissions account for 14% of global greenhouse gases, with significant reductions possible.
Agriculture in EU countries contributes to greenhouse gas emissions mainly through enteric fermentation and manure management. In 2007, the emissions per person from agriculture were 0.948 tonnes of CO2-equivalent, accounting for 9.2% of total emissions, down from 11% in 1990. Comparatively, fuel combustion emits 7,680 t CO2 eq. per person, with transport sector emissions at 1.933 t CO2 eq. per person. Globally, agriculture contributes almost 14% of total emissions, with nitrous oxide and methane being the most significant gases. Between 1990 and 2007, CO2 emissions decreased by 4.84%, nitrous oxide by 27.14%, methane by 31.15%, and fluorinated gases increased by 31.06%.
