Breakthrough in Japonica Hybrid Rice Breeding Promises Higher Yields and Lower Costs
Research on developing hybrid rice varieties in Jiangsu, China started in the late 1970s. By the 1990s, significant progress was made in breeding middle and late season hybrids with improved grain quality and seed production. However, challenges like low yield performance, disease susceptibility, and high production costs still exist. To enhance hybrid rice breeding in Jiangsu, focus should be on developing strong restoring and outcrossing lines, creating new hybrids with late maturity, and improving seed production technology for higher yields and lower costs.
