Unsustainable fishing practices threaten marine ecosystems and livelihoods in Vietnam.
The project "Strategies for trawl fisheries bycatch management" in KienGiang, Vietnam aims to address the issue of bycatch, which is the unintentional capture of non-targeted species during fishing. By promoting sustainable fishing practices and improved trawl management, the project seeks to reduce the negative impact of bycatch on ecosystems and livelihoods. The project was developed by FAO in collaboration with SEAFDEC and governments of participating countries. In KienGiang Province, marine capture fisheries have grown significantly, but face challenges such as unsustainable development and insufficient fisheries management.
