Kenaf Fiber Breakthrough Unlocks Path to Sustainable Cellulose Production
The researchers found that treating kenaf outer bast fiber with acid can produce pure cellulose and break down hemicellulose into simpler sugars. By testing different temperatures, acid concentrations, and reaction times, they discovered that high temperatures and strong acid solutions are best for maximizing cellulose purity. The optimal conditions for acid treatment were 130°C temperature with 0.25 N sulfuric acid for 60 minutes to break down hemicellulose, and 1.00 N sulfuric acid for 120 minutes to increase cellulose purity. This study shows that acid hydrolysis can effectively extract pure cellulose from kenaf outer bast fiber.
