High salt and cadmium levels impact cucumber and tomato growth dramatically.
The study looked at how salt stress and cadmium affected the growth of cucumber and tomato plants. They found that when cucumber seeds were exposed to 170 mmol/L of salt and 10 mmol/L of cadmium, their germination rate increased and growth was promoted. However, when the cadmium concentration reached 50 mmol/L, the growth of the roots was inhibited. For tomatoes, even a low concentration of 10 mmol/L of cadmium resulted in no growth, and at 20 mmol/L, the germination rate was only 20% with no lateral roots.
